Interviewer: When and where were you born? Maria Jiménez: I was born in Castanas, Cahuilla, Mexico on August 2nd 1950. Basically, I live in Mexico until we migrated in 1957. So, I was 6 years old when we crossed the border. Basically, drove from Cahuilla to Houston. My father brought us. At the time it was very easy to become legal residents, so we crossed the border legally. Interviewer: How was that process? How did you go about crossing legally? Maria Jiménez: Well my father first got his paper work because he was a skilled worker, a machinist. In those days it was east to get your paperwork because of your skills. Then later it was basically [phone rang].
