Zapata: When did you serve? Abalos: Okay- I always remember when I served based on my daughter’s age. I think I got on in 1988, and I served for 16 years. So right around there, 1988 or '90 is when this was going on. I cannot remember exactly. Zapata: What year did you stop running for school board? Abalos: Well, it was 16 years later. So I do not remember when it is. Honestly, I got defeated. It was about 2004 when I was last on it. I got defeated because there was a movement to prioritize sex education. There was a movement to- they did not want us teaching sex ed, they just wanted them to abstain. That was the movement to abstain. No teaching of anything. I lost because of that. Others on the school board lost because – it was very different. They lost because they supported a superintendent people did not like. They basically lost because of that. I know for a fact that I did not because I was very outspoken against the superintendent. I lost because of the abstinence only issue. The women who beat me served two years and then got off. Did the abstinence only thing and it is no longer in existence of course because you have to address that issue with students. So, I served until then.
