Interviewer-"I wan to talk about the try-out committee for sure, but I was reading online that you recommended a drop-out program that was considered highly effective while you were in the school board, can you tell me a little bit about why you started that?" Mr. Garza-When I came on in 69, I saw three basic needs that were needed. One was the [?] program, the other one was for more schools need to be named after Hispanics cause that time we only had one, Benito Juarez in West Dallas [?] Benito Juarez was a Mexican President, he was not one of the Hispanic [?] from Texas. And, the third one was a [?] to put in place to get input from Hispanic community [?]. There was a pastor here by the name of Rubin [?] was pastoring, a pastor here in West Dallas and everyday he would [?] and so I wanted the school board which was [?] at that time [?] He agreed to form a Hispanic Advisory Committee [?] Martinez and Gloria Sanchez and a number of others. I've been part of that group and Rizo was a part of [?] and so, those were the three things that pushed forward those two years that were on a school board from 69-71 [?] and then [?] committee I also stayed on top of, one of the things that the [?] very much took exceptions of my advocacy was that first of all, I wanted to see valuable education implemented as soon as possible and I wrote in a letter asking for specific questions, but when it was going to happen and he was ignoring me. So, I went to the school board president, Dr. Marvin Berkley and Dr. Martin called [?] and said, "Listen to Trini." lol! So, you know, you learn to manuever the system through one way or another. The other [?] when time came to implement the court order, they had just established [?] soo many blacks and soo many whites in this district and [?] was including Hispanics as whites [?] and no one did like that at all, lol! When I got involved in the community [?] I remember [?] and I was going to get my stamp to provide a free meal, when he looked at me, he says, "I remember you, I have no use for you." So, I said, charge him, lol! So that time, he just come around cause after he came up to superintendent, he would always consult them and [?] he end up in the school board and since we become good friends, but, at that time, well it was it was become a transition [?] but I took that [?].....
